October 31, 2008
The adaptabily of FieldTRAKS Agriculture to meet complex business requirements and integrate with establish business systems was demonstrated through a recent project with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in which the Agency implemented FieldTRAKS Agriculture Web and a customized version of the FieldTRAKS Mobile solutions to test the feasability of utilizing GPS Handheld Dataloggers to support Field Inspectors in their collection of soil samples and field inspection data.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for the federal Seed Potato Certification Program, establishment and maintenance of policy directives to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases and regulated quarantine pests of potatoes in Canada. In the fall of 2007 international concerns were raised over the detection of golden nematode, a species of potato cyst nematode (PCN), in two soil samples from two farms in northern Alberta. To ensure the pest is contained, the CFIA has implemented an intensive soil sampling programme both witnin Alberta and elsewhere in Canada.
The FieldTRAKS Mobile solution has demonstrated that collection of in-field soil samples and field inspections can be streamlined through the adoption of GPS enabled handheld technology that is integrated with the national Multi-Commodity Activities Program (MCAP) database.
